Lutheran Life Villages is a nonprofit organization. To provide the best in retirement-living options and compassionate care to our residents, we depend upon the generosity and foresight of individuals and organizations.

We believe that as a nonprofit organization, Lutheran Life Villages is better-suited to serve the needs of older adults than is a for-profit business. The key to our reasoning is found in the phrase “for profit.” All of the money entrusted to us goes into providing living options and services that will enhance the lives of our residents. In contrast, for-profit businesses must be profitable to satisfy the needs of ownership and, in some instances, meet the expectations of stockholders. If an organization must be profitable to survive, it may find it necessary to scale back on important services.

Lutheran Life Villages has been offering quality living options and care for 80 years, and during that time, we’ve provided for countless residents who would never have had the resources necessary to seek living options and care with a for-profit business. In fact, over the past 10 years, we’ve provided more than $20 million in care for which we weren’t reimbursed. In 2010 alone, we provided more than $2.6 million in care for which we were not compensated.

We also employ more than 400 people. Because we’re a nonprofit organization, we’re able to staff our nursing and rehabilitation communities at a level that’s significantly higher than the state average, which results in a higher level of one-on-one personal care.

Moreover, those of us at Lutheran Life Villages take our nonprofit status very seriously, and we strive to give back to the community.

We sponsor fundraising events to benefit area organizations that provide services to older adults, to help feed those in need, and to promote wellness among the general public. We also provide food for Meals On Wheels.

We offer free educational programs on topics of interest to older adults—estate planning, Alzheimer’s disease, downsizing households, wellness, health care—to our residents and to the general public. We sponsor the Foster Grandparent program. Our Heritage Trail is used by the public and personnel at Fort Wayne Fire Station 12.

We offer the use of our campuses to other nonprofit organizations for their board meetings, retreats, and other gatherings. Our campuses also serve as polling places. And we provide space free of charge to Lutheran Social Services of Indiana’s Children’s Village on our Fort Wayne campus.
